Las velas de sebo desprenden un humo graso y un desagradable olor, pero, en cambio son baratas y fiables. El historiador Plinio nos informa de que en el siglo I a. C. Había velas hechas de brea y mechas de lino, y otras que se elaboraban sumergiendo un junco en cera fundida y dejando que ésta se solidificara. Se sabe que los romanos usaban velas tanto de sebo como de cera, y en especial de cera de abeja. Estos materiales sencillos fueron utilizados hasta que, durante el siglo diecinueve, fue posible emplear una gama más amplia de combustibles. La estearina, que provenía de la grasa animal, fue desarrollada durante la década de 1820. Más resistentes que el sebo a las temperaturas altas, no desprendían olores molestos y daba como resultado velas de más larga duración.
Recientemente, el descubrimiento del aceite de petróleo y la mejora de los procesos de refinado ha hecho posible la producción de grandes cantidades de cera de parafina.
